The Mountain View Mountain Lions lost their fifth straight game Friday night, following a second-half meltdown against Catalina Foothills.

The Mountain Lions started the game strong with the defense forcing a quick fumble to give the offense good starting position.

In the first offensive drive, quarterback Cris Thorson came out firing, hitting Jerry Teague in the end zone for a 23-yard score.

With the extra point, the Mountain Lions took a quick 7-0 lead with 7:24 left in the first quarter.

Offenses for both teams struggled throughout the first half.

It was the Mountain Lions’ defense that stood out to start the game. The Mountain Lions had three turnovers in the first half, including two Zach Henschell interceptions.

Before halftime, the Mountain Lions had two opportunities to put points on the board, but failed to convert on the Henschell interceptions.

In the second half, Catalina Foothills erased the first-half mistakes on offense and started moving the ball.

After having a 43-yard touchdown called back on a personal foul, quarterback Alyn Fletcher found Michael Dehen for the 29-yard touchdown. The missed extra point allowed the Mountain Lions to hang on to a 7-6 lead with 6:20 left in the third quarter.

Thorson threw an interception, giving Catalina Foothills another opportunity as time ticked down in the third. Catalina Foothills took advantage, kicking a field goal to make the score 9-7 with 11:56 left in the game.

With dropped passes, turnovers and no running game, the Mountain Lions struggled the entire second half.

After Thorson threw his second interception of the game, Catalina Foothills increased the lead. Fletcher threw it up to receiver Matt Lai. Mountain View’s Devon McPeek made a play on the ball, but Lai came down with it. Lai landed in the end zone to give Catalina Foothills a 16-7 lead with 7:20 left in the game.

Before the game ended, Catalina Foothills would extend their lead when Fletcher took it into the end zone himself to take the 22-7 victory.

With two games left in the season, Mountain View is now 3-5.

In other games in the region, Ironwood Ridge improved to 7-1, defeating Flowing Wells 41-14.

Canyon Del Oro improved to 5-3, defeating Tucson High 36-15.

Marana continues to struggle in a winless season, losing to Amphitheater 36-21.
