Members of Pima Community College’s AmeriCorps program and Student Leadership Council will join thousands of Americans volunteering across the country for the Martin Luther King Day of Service, January 20.

The event is being hosted at the Strauss Manor, an apartment complex for seniors on Tucson’s East Side.

The day of service, celebration and reflection in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will include:  “It’s Your Story, Tell It,” a compilation of remembrances and experiences with civil rights; viewing and discussion of the short film, “Barrios and Barriers: The Tucson Civil Rights Era”; storytelling and readings from books about Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders; games and more.

Every day, AmeriCorps members across the country make a powerful difference by serving in areas of education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, economic opportunities, and supporting veterans and military families.

Since 1994, more than 800,000 people have taken the pledge to “get things done for America.”  These members have mobilized and managed an additional 3.4 million community volunteers for a total of 1 billion hours of service.
