Northwest Fire District firefighters responded to the SW corner of Ina and LaCholla after a two vehicle collision sent a Lexus sedan crashing into a bus stop. The incident began just before 8 a.m.
The first arriving engine company found that the Lexus sedan had left the roadway after a collision with a second vehicle and struck the bus stop. The crash caused the roof structure of the bus stop to collapse down onto the car. The roof damage as well as the damage to the car itself caused the driver to be trapped within the vehicle.
Firefighters began to stabilize the damaged bus stop using emergency shoring equipment. A technical rescue team responded to the scene to assist first arriving units with stabilization. Crews used the Jaws-of-Life to remove the driver’s door to free the patient. The patient, an 18 year-old female was transported to the trauma center at UAMC for evaluation. The second vehicle was occupied by a female driver who was uninjured in the incident.
The roadway (Eastbound Ina) was restricted to one lane during the response and subsequent investigation into the cause of the incident by the Pima County Sherriff’s Department.
Sun Tran has set up a temporary stop just east of the permanent bus stop while clean-up and repairs are made to the bus stop structure. A time frame for completion is not known. Bus service was not interrupted and is running normally at the location.
