The field of candidates is getting crowed in the special election for Congressional District 8, with Republican John Lervold announcing his candidacy.

Lervold joins Republicans Frank Antenori, sports broadcaster David Sitton and Jesse Kelly on the Primary ballot.

Lervold, of Sierra Vista, has been training and cerifying new Department of Defense interrogators at the Ft. Huachuca Army Base since 2008.

Lervold grew up in California.

The Republicans candidates are looking to finish Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' term, which expires in January 2013.

Giffords resigned on Jan. 22 in order to spend more time recovering from the gunshot wound to the head she suffered on Jan. 8, 2011.

Gov. Jan Brewer set the Primary Election for April 17, and the General for June 12.

Rep. Matt Heinz has been the only Democrat to enter the race to date, but there is speculation that Giffords' longtime aide Ron Barber will announce his candidacy this week.

Barber was also shot on Jan. 8, and has spent the last year recovering from a leg injury.
