Six months after the mass shootings took place on Jan. 8 in Tucson, area residents joined hands to reflect and honor the shootings’ victims, survivors and first responders during a special ceremony held July 8 at the La Toscana Village Shopping Center at Ina and Oracle roads, the site of the tragedy.

During the ceremony, the Ceremonial National 9/11 Flag was raised as part of an effort by the New York Says Thank You Foundation to take the flag to all 50 states. At each stop, including Tucson, local service heroes were given the privilege of stitching the flag back to its original 13-stripe format using pieces of fabric from American flags destined for retirement from each state.

The flag will eventually become part of the permanent collection of the National Sept. 11 Memorial Museum being built at the World Trade Center.
