Gates that are usually closed seasonally on Mount Lemmon will be opened Friday, Feb. 28 as long as it doesn't snow, according to a press release.
The gates are closed annually due to weather by the USDA Forest Service of the Coronado National Forest.
The following gates are to be opened:
- General Hitchcock Campground
- Incinerator Ridge Road
- Organization Ridge Road
- Marshall Gulch
- Control Road (all three gates)
- The road to Lemon Rock parking area
Currently ice is present on the roads accessing Mt. Bigelow and Bear Wallow leaving them unsafe for public use.
According to The National Weather Service there is a high chance of precipitation over the weekend.
Fri. Feb. 28 – Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph.
Sat. Mar. 1 – Rain showers. High near 52. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Sun. Mar. 2 – A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 49.
Opening of the gates is dependent on weather conditions and would be delayed in the event of snowfall.
