According to a recent ranking published by Movoto Real Estate, the Town of Oro Valley is ranked #8 on the list of America’s 10 Safest Suburbs.

“We are proud of this new distinction,” commented Mayor Satish Hiremath. “The Movoto ranking affirms what we’ve known all along: Oro Valley is one of the safest communities in America, and we have one of the best police departments in the nation.”

To produce this ranking, Movoto relied on a list of 120 places which are the largest suburbs of the 50 most populous cities in the U.S. and applied criteria, based on data from the FBI’s most recent national crime report (2012). The data included: property crimes per capita, violent crimes per capita and the chances of being the victim of a crime.

Hmmmmm. Oh, yes, we are really quite safe here in Oro Valley. Especially for us Senior Citizens. The average predominant age in Oro Valley is between 62 and 99 and a half, and we have a fine, visible police presence.. They have police cruisers following behind you, shadowing you like an unwelcome relative, as you nervously drive to Walmart, your knuckles grasping the steering wheel while your arthritis wracked foot struggles to stay below 40 mph. They come from no where in particular, and slowly pull behind you lagging back a couple hundred feet. The officer is wondering if you will forget he or she is even there at all. And if you should have a momentary lapse, a senior moment, you might forget about the speed limit and push slightly down on the accelerator to the tune of Gordon Lightfoot's "Carefree Highway" playing on the radio. By now you are in the cruiser's radar, and a glance at your rear view mirror shows a cascade of beautiful lights shining behind you.
Yes....we are safe in Oro Valley. There are also a number of ninja motorcycle cops making their abode.....again usually come from behind a Saguaro cactis or on a side road.....again...Tangerine Road toward Walmart.....the target area. I think Walmart is kind of an Oro Valley monument....and a magnet for family shopping and Seniors looking for an excuse to get out of the house. Sometimes I see Seniors walking out with only a small package and a fresh Ice Cream cone from the McDonalds concession. Hence...It was really an ice cream run in the first place.
We are also safe here because some of the developments are quiet. My son said the reason our neighborhood in Oro Valley is so quiet is because most of the residents came to Arizona to hide out, and are under the Federal witness protection program. Hmmmmmm. Maybe?
We have a nice community in Oro Valley. We also have great desert scenery, and I love the wildlife, as I usually see lots of coyotes, quail, Owls....but not to big on snakes. The only safety issue to be concerned about in my Oro Valley neighborhood is the large packs of Javelina which run through here like they did for thousands of years, and they do like my front yard as their 1000 year rest stop. They bring their young, their cousins, their friends, right up to my little wall. The come when they want, leave when they want, and always use their stink glands to tell the neighbors they were here. Eventually, I don't see them for months at a time. Anyway....I still live in safe Oro Valley....and it is time for another trip to Walmart, another ice cream cone, and another day checking my rear view mirror to see if a ninja police motorcycle has quietly pulled up behind me while my eyes were admiring the Catalina Mountains from Tangerine Road.
