Seeing a chandelier hanging from a ceiling is common, but it’s rare to see 1,000 purses hanging overhead such as those at Persnickety’s New and Resale, a women’s boutique at 6447 N. Oracle Rd. in the Orange Grove Village Shopping Center.

The store has an array of purses ranging in price. Among the purses are designer names such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Dooney Bourke.

But, the shop is much more than a place to look for a purse.  It’s a kaleidoscope of clothing and accessories for virtually every budget.

Debi and Monty Wallace bought the shop in 2000.  Debi’s background was in sales, but she had also been a stay-at-home mom of six.  Monty, who does the books, had always been in business for himself.

When their youngest child entered high school, Debi was ready to go back to work.  She had a passion for fashion, so buying Persnickety’s seemed like a good idea for the two residents from Northwest Tucson.

From the beginning, Debi and Monty had a unique vision for the shop, where most inventory is consigned.

“I wanted a store that is a fun place to shop, where people would leave with a smile on their face after an enjoyable experience,” Debi said. “I also wanted a store where people could find a special treasure no one else had.  It’s easy to go into a shop where there are a few of the same items in different colors and sizes.  My store is for the person looking for something unique at a good price. I call it Treasuring.”

Treasuring at Persnickety’s is something customers enjoy.  Some acquisitions from the shop may include Chico’s capris, a red Fendi crossover purse and a linen blend shrug with tiny ruffled edges.

Debi added that Persnickety’s is not a place for the person who wants to be in and out within five minutes.

“For the true shopaholic,” she said. “It’s a rush.  I get a kick out of customers and their reaction when they come in for the first time.”

On any given day, staff welcomes at least two or three new customers who heard about the shop from a friend.

Merchandise is geared toward women of all ages, from prom gowns to designer names like Juicy Couture and Ed Hardy.

Persnickety’s has several specialized areas, including a large inventory of Chico’s merchandise along with western wear and cowgirl boots.  According to Debi, Persnickety’s sells at least 20 pairs of cowboy boots per week from its inventory of more than 400.

The shop also carries jewelry, with 15 cases that contain some vintage pieces, along with a gamut of costume jewelry.

Persnickety’s consignment counter is open Thursdays and Saturdays from l0 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The consignment policy is a 50/50 split, customer and store.

“We want to be fair and deal with integrity,” Debi said.

Jewelry is also consigned, but most often bought outright.

The Wallaces also want to give back to the community.  Many unsold items are donated to New Beginnings, an organization for women in need who want to get back into the workforce.

In the spring, the store also provides prom attire to deserving students at Canyon Del Oro High School.

Even while working a 50-60 hour week, Debi is known for her consistently good humor, readiness to share a laugh and most importantly, her work ethic.

“Persnickety’s is my baby,” Debi said. “I put my heart and soul into it every day.  When I get a compliment on what I love to do there is nothing better.”

Persnickety’s Half Off Half the Store sale starts June 11.
