For the month of June, some members of the Explorer staff made their way to Stadium Grill and Bar for their monthly Sippin’ Social.
The sports bar, located at 3682 W. Orange Grove Road, happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 3 to 7 p.m.
At 4 p.m., we arrived at what seemed about the time people started coming in through the doors. The bar and grill, which is open 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, has a bar area along with a seating area with tables that can easily be moved and put together to accommodate larger groups. There were pool tables, a patio, and an area that can host live music and karaoke.
Chris Flora and I were promptly greeted and our drink order was quickly placed. Sticking to their happy hour menu, Chris ordered a tall (23 ounces) Michelob Ultra for $3.25 (regular $4.75), and I ordered a tall Coors Light for $3 (regular $4.25).
The drinks came swiftly and tasted as they should. The beers were cold and refreshing, but there isn’t much one can say about Coors Light and Michelob Ultra – they are, in fact, just… beer.
From the happy hour menu, our eyes found the wings, which are regularly $8.95 for a dozen. For happy hour they were a dollar off. We decided to go with half garlic Parmesan and half mild. The other choices for the wings included; hot, medium, BBQ, teriyaki, and lemon pepper.
We also ordered the three-cheese nachos, which were happy hour-priced at $7.95 (regular $8.95). The nachos came with corn tortilla chips, covered in three cheeses, onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, salsa and sour cream.
The entire purpose of our monthly Sippin’ Social is for two reasons. First and foremost, it is a way for you, the reader, to come and meet some of us, enjoy and drink and talk about things you may like or dislike about us or the community you live in. It is ultimately an open and off-the-record forum. Secondly, it is a way for us to inform the public about places to go to where you can eat and drink.
After our appetizer order was placed, a few readers came in and joined us for what was a wonderful discussion ranging from our history and backgrounds to concerns seen in the community.
As the wings and nachos arrived, Chris ordered another Michelob Ultra and I ordered an Odell IPA, which was happy hour-priced at $5.50, both which again quickly arrived on our table.
The wings were moist and juicy. They were soft and tender in the middle with just the right amount of crispiness on the ends. The amount of seasoning on both flavors was just enough to give the chicken a wonderful flavor, but not so much that it overpowered them.
In contrast the three-cheese nachos could have been cheesier. The shredded cheese wasn’t melted in some places, and in other places it fused the chips together making for eating the nachos a two-handed affair.
To wash down these treats, my Odell IPA had a wonderfully refreshing quality to it with a light grapefruit flavor with just a touch of bitter at the end.
The wings and the beer are enough reasons alone to return. But the quick service and comfortable atmosphere, coupled with the great company who joined Chris and I, made for a wonderful Sippin’ Social and time at the Stadium Grill and Bar.
