Pima Community College adjunct instructor Gloria McMillan has organized an exhibit honoring famous science fiction writer Ray Bradbury.

“Mars Madness: Sci-Fi, Popular Culture and Ray Bradbury’s Literary Journey to Outer Space” opens Jan. 21 in Special Collections at The University of Arizona.

The exhibit, which will be on display through August, features a variety of material associated with Ray Bradbury, the famous science fiction author of “The Martian Chronicles” and the novel “Fahrenheit 451.” Culled from Special Collections’ literary archives, items on display include original works written by Bradbury, works of others who influenced him, pulp sci-fi magazines, photos of Mars, and movie memorabilia. A selection of sci-fi related toys, on loan from the private collection of local sci-fi aficionado Wolf Forrest, is also on display.

McMillan, a published author, teaches writing at Pima’s Northwest Campus. Her edited work, “Orbiting Ray Bradbury’s Mars: Biographical, Anthropological, Literary, Scientific and Other Perspectives,” was published in 2013 by McFarland and Co. Through the collection of essays on Bradbury, McMillan said she aimed to present a “kaleidoscopic view” of Bradbury, and his work, through the academic lenses of anthropology, literature, science, media and education.

Two events are planned in conjunction with “Mars Madness.” Both events are free and open to the public and will be held in Special Collections, 1510 E. University Blvd.

  • Opening Reception with Wolf Forrest, contributor to “Orbiting Ray Bradbury’s Mars”
    5:30-6:30 p.m., Jan. 21
  • Book Signing with Gloria McMillan
3:30-4:30 p.m., March 15 (during the Tucson Festival of Books)
