Sippin' Social: Kicking our feet up at The Lodge

There is no need to hire a guide, look at blurry film footage, and follow footprints in the mud to find The Lodge Sasquatch Kitchen, located at Ina Road and La Cholla Boulevard.

The northwest restaurant, which resides on the southeast corner of the Foothills Mall, opened its doors to the public late last year.

For this month’s Sippin Social, The Explorer’s Hannah McLeod and I went to The Lodge, 7265 N. La Cholla Blvd., on April 18 to try out its happy hour. The discounted drinks are only available in the very large and spacious bar area, which is flanked by an outside patio area with corn hole and a larger version of Jenga. 

The daily happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. includes $3 domestic drafts, house wines and well drinks. Its sangria is $3 and appetizers are half priced. Other bar deals of the day are mildly deceptive in being offered only from 9 p.m. to close.

After a slight wait for a server to stop by our table, we skipped out on the ordinary beers, and each decided on the seasonal beer being offered, the aptly named Sierra Nevada BigFoot Barley Wine Style Ale, for $5.

It was served just the way I like beers, in an ice-cold glass, dripping with frost that slightly freezes the beer when it is first poured in.

The beer is smooth and crisp up front, but be ready for the very dry and bitter hop finish. This is a phenomenal beer that seems to dry out your tongue with hops and doesn’t taste like it is high in alcohol. Be careful – with a 9.6 percent alcohol, this beer has a kick to it.

To help absorb the beer, Hannah and I ordered The Wildcat, regularly $9.99, which are skin-on fries covered with shredded beef, the Lodge’s cheese sauce, black olives, sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, green onions and jalapeños. 

The ingredients sprinkled over the top of the hot and fairly crisp fries were fresh and delicious but difficult to scoop up with fries as one would usually do with chips and these ingredients. 

The cheese, which covered most of the fries, was pretty bland and tasted and looked like the cheese that comes with nachos at a baseball game.

We also ordered the White Cheddar Cheese Curds, regularly $6.99. The server let us know that these were very tasty and we wouldn’t be disappointed.

He was right; these little batter dipped and fried balls of cheese were, as the server said, “The bomb.” The dipping ranch had the right amount of tanginess and was thick enough to stay scooped on as we dipped away.

Wanting to take a taste from of the Lodge’s Wild Spirits that are all $6, I went with the Cabin Fever. It is made with Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea, vodka, mint, honey water, and in-house made lemonade. 

The Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea is a very sweet drink and adding honey water and a sweet batch of lemonade, this drink had me wanting some carbonation to lighten this mojito-inspired drink up.

Hannah decided on the Skinny Squatch, which is made with Skinny Girl vodka, agave nectar, lime juice and sparkling water. Served in a martini glass, the agave nectar added a complexity and sweetness to this refreshing take on the vodka martini.

The atmosphere was very inviting, with doors letting a slight breeze come through the bar. With the drink selection of six draft beers, 15 in bottles, and 10 types of wine, and 11 signature drinks, the selection can appeal to anyone’s tastes. The horseshoe bar’s televisions, games on the patio and open space will accommodate most people’s happy hour desires.
