Trevor Barroero, a high school percussionist from Ironwood Ridge High School, will be performing Thursday night.

Last summer, Barroero attend the prestigious Juilliard Percussion Seminar in New York City, being one of only 16 students chosen worldwide.

"My two weeks at the Juilliard Seminar were absolutely life-changing," said Barroero. "I was able to meet other percussionists my age from all around the world, including places as far as Hong Kong and Norway. I worked with some of the world's leading percussion icons and, as a result, have since established indispensable connections with professional musicians from around the count."

Barroero said his experiences last summer solidified his aspiration to pursue a music education in college.

From January to March of this year, Barroero traveled with his mom all around the country to audition at a few of his top-choice universities. He was accepted to Northwestern University, the University of Michigan, the University of North Texas, and the University of Arizona.

"Most importantly, however, I was chosen as one of only 22 high school seniors in the state of Arizona to be named a Flinn Scholar," said Barroero.

With the merit-based Flinn Foundation Scholarship, Barroero will be receiving a full-ride to the University of Arizona along with $8,000 for foreign travel.

Over the next four years Barroero will be able to travel the world as a Flinn Scholar, working closely with percussionists from around the globe.

"One of my dreams is to travel to Brazil in the next couple years to study Portuguese and Brazilian Hand-Drumming," he said. "

I will be graduating from Ironwood Ridge in little over a week and I have one last public performance left as a high schooler."

The talented musician will get his wish, twice.

Barroero will be presenting a Collaborative Senior Percussion Recital with  close friend, Gibb Mandish from Tucson High School..

The two will be presenting the same program on two separate nights at two separate venues. The first one is Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the Ironwood Ridge Auditorium.

The second is on Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

The students will be performing solos and duets on marimba, vibraphone, multi-percussion, and other instruments, composed by Paul Smadbeck, Steve Reich, Blake Tyson, Gene Koshinski, Astor Piazzolla, and more.

Trevor is one great young person who is mature beyond his years. His accomplished musical talents are only outdone by his outstanding personal character.

His successes are not just by chance. His mother, father and siblings were there for him day and night. I watched in amazement as his family smiled and took such pleasure in his being.

I was fortunate to have taught Trevor many moons ago. Congrats Trevor!

Trevor and others like him will make our world a better place for all.
