The men in black are back, as Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have teamed up for the third movie of the popular series. While critics say the third movie is safe, it still fits nicely into what has now become a trilogy.

Smith has already been promoting the new film overseas, with the film opening over Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. even though it took 10 years for the third installment to be released, critics and audiences were eager to see what Agents J and K would be going through this time.

The newest release certainly won’t hurt the Men in Black empire. The original movie opened to audiences in 1997, grossing $587,790,539 worldwide. This captured audiences immediately, with Smith playing the overly-confident cop with the LA Police Department, but soon finds he knows nothing when he is recruited by the secret agency aimed and protecting earth against extraterestrials.

After reveling in the first movie’s success, “Men in Black 2” was released in 2002. This time, Smith was the seasoned protector with the agency, but struggling to find the partner that could replace K. When they come under attack, K is brought back because only he holds the key to information that would save the universe and humankind.

“Men in Black 3” doesn’t stray far away from the basic plot. These movies really don’t have to stretch far with a cast like they have. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are the  reason why these movies continue to be successful, even if they are released five and 10 years apart.

In “Men in Black 3,” J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But, back in time to put things right, J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him. There are secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency and the future of humankind.

In this outing, Agent J travels back to 1969 and the early days of the anti-paranormal agency. He must stop an alien from assassinating Agent K as a younger man in order to prevent a future threat to the MIB organization as well as mankind. Oscar winner Emma Thompson appears as Oh in modern times, and Alice Eve as a young agent.

This leap into the past gives audiences the opportunity to learn about the founding of the Men in Black organization.

In the 10 years since the last film, special effects have reached new technological heights, with 3D the current trend to see any action praise for its inventive take on science fiction.
