Classes will begin a week later and will end before Memorial Day for students in Amphitheater Public Schools during the next two years.

Also, the school year won't grow longer and, for all but two schools, neither will the school days - despite recent long discussions at school board meetings about whether to add minutes or days to the school calendar to meet new legislative requirements.

The governing board voted to start school a week later than it started this year because of parent requests, said Todd Jaeger, associate to the superintendent.

"We've always had a little bit of a rub there about having the fall break and, consequently, having to start earlier in the year than other school districts," Jaeger said. "We've received several complaints a year based on how early we started."

In 2004-05, classes will begin Aug. 12 and end May 25, with the same holiday break and intersession length as this year. In 2005-06, the calendar will look similar, with classes beginning Aug. 11 and ending May 26.

As for the minutes-versus-days debate, the governing board initiated some research and discovered that most schools in the district already meet the calendar length requirements that legislation says they must have in place by 2005-06 - 180 days or a number of minutes extending the days to make up for the shorter year.

"Every school is allowed to kind of set its schedule so long as they meet minimum requirements," Jaeger said. "All except two were meeting the minimum requirements that would exist two years from now."

Cross and Amphitheater middle schools will have to extend their school days by about 10 minutes to meet state requirements for 2005-06.
