August 17, 2005 - The CDO-Charlton Athletic US Soccer Academy has identified its first star in the making. Anthony Galdys, of Tempe, will be the first player the Northwest-based soccer program sends to London to train with the English Premier League's Charlton Athletic Soccer club.

Galdys, 13, will spend two weeks overseas in England training with the Charlton Athletic under-13 boys team at the club's professional training facility. From there, he will travel with team to Holland to compete in an international tournament.

Part of the point of the marriage between the Canyon Del Oro Soccer League and Charlton Athletic was to identify future players worthy of playing for Charlton in the English Premier League.

Galdys wowed Charlton scouts several months earlier and was identified as the perfect candidate for the club to keep tabs on. Legend has it that by the age of 10 Galdys could already do a thousand juggles.

The CDO-Charlton program isn't solely for identifying its next English Premier League players. The club has established its Northwest Junior Soccer Academy, which stresses the fundamentals and rules of the game in a fun atmosphere conducive to learning and appreciating the sport.

Although Charlton has now established 11 such centers throughout North America that will be starting up within the next year, the Oro Valley program remains Charlton's hub in the United States.

No pain, no gain

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association has inducted Scott Linaker into its hall of fame. The Canyon Del Oro High School trainer is the first high school trainer to be inducted into the nonprofit association's hall, which includes members from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Linaker, who has been with CDO for 13 years, serves as the association's district director and president, and he sits on the board of directors for the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Jump for Joy

It was a good summer for the Catalina Foothills High School varsity and junior varsity cheer squads. The squads took several awards at the Universal Cheerleader Association's cheer camp this summer, including first place trophies in cheering, home pom performance, and the X-treme Routine Dance competitions. On the way to winning, with her squad, the Superior Squad Trophy, Stephanie Craig was named the Jump Off Camp Champ. Other accolades went to Melissa Foster, Stephanie Minor, RaeAnn Buckley, Caitlyn Harrison, Jackie Hanks and Craig, who were named to the All-Star Cheerleader team. The Falcons also earned two Superior Mascot trophies.
