August 25, 2004 - The Marana Unifed School District will begin the process of selecting its next superintendent by first choosing the outside company that will assist in the search, district administrators said.

The district has distributed 38 requests to head-hunting companies across the nation and will award the bid Sept. 14. The district may have a candidate selected by late February or early March 2005, said community relations coordinator Tamara Crawley. However, the timeline is conditional upon which company is selected to assist in the search.

Companies have until Sept. 9 to file a proposal that descirbes their qualifications and experience in serving districts of similar size.

A committee consisting of Interim Superintendent Jane Pryne, Chief Financial Officer Dan Contorno and Procurement Manager Hazel Houston will review the proposals and recommend a company to the board.

The Arizona School Boards Association in Phoenix, and Arizona State University College of Education Research and Service in Tempe both received a request, as well as five other companies in Tucson. Companies as far away as New York, Texas and Massachussetts also received requests.

The governing board's level of participation in choosing the next superintendent will depend on the company that is selected, Houston said. If the board is confident in the company's ability to select a candidate, it will likely accept that recommendation. However, the board will take a more active role in the selection if necessary. Further details in the selection process are difficult to determine until the board receives each company's proposal, Houston said.
