Nov. 30, 2005 - It's time to lace up the sneakers and get in the starting blocks at Canyon Del Oro High School. Head track coach Jim Truitt has announced that LaTonya Sheffield will join the coaching staff for the Dorado's track and field team.

Last year Sheffield coached at Catalina Foothills High School but made the jump to CDO for a chance to work closely with her daughter Kala, who is a freshman runner and basketball player at the Oro Valley school.

Cut from the same mold as Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Florence Griffith Joyner, Sheffield was also an Olympic athlete. Sheffield competed in the 400-meter hurdles for the United States in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Sheffield joins a deep coaching staff that already boasts John Tansley, Michelle Gerard, Matt Valenzuela, Dusty Peace and Rick Glider.

Powder Puff

Football season for the boys is over and now it's time for the girls to take center stage. Ironwood Ridge High School hosted its first Powder Puff football game Nov. 29. The flag-football game pitted a confident senior class against the juniors at Ironwood Ridge. This is the first year the district has given its blessing for the school to hold such an event. The school originally tried to organize one in its first and second years in Oro Valley only to be turned aside. Assuming the duties as coaches and cheerleaders was the boys from the Ironwood Ridge football team.

Ice to see you

Hockey buffs have a new arena to escape the desert landscape to get away and hit the ice. Tucson Ice will open to the public Dec. 3 and 4 at 7333 E. Rosewood St. in the building formerly known as Polar Ice. The 87,000-square foot arena has been completely refurbished and is more fan-friendly than ever. The facility will house twin NHL-sized rinks, a Little Anthony's Diner overlooking the ice, a fully stocked pro shop and a new lobby for parties.

Leagues and clinics for children, high school students, women and die-hard puck-heads are among the additions to the arena. Public skating is available on Wednesdays, and Friday through Sunday. For more information go to www.tucsonice.com.
