Former Ironwood Ridge standout Michael Neufeldt will be a part of the initial recruiting classes at Benedictine University at Mesa. Neufeldt has committed to play volleyball for the school next year. The school is just starting up an athletics program.
Benedictine University at Mesa will be bringing sports to the branch campus beginning fall 2014.
"It is an exciting time for Benedictine University at Mesa. The addition of an intercollegiate athletics program will have an immediate impact on the campus. We look forward to the development of this program and the ability to connect with the community through intercollegiate athletics," said director of athletics Mark McHorney via press release.
The University will be sponsoring a competitive club program for men's and women's golf, tennis, cross country and volleyball. The programs will compete against other University and College club programs in Arizona, Nevada and California over the next two years. The University is currently seeking membership in multiple national organizations and conferences. "As our athletic programs develop the picture will become clearer as to what national affiliation and conference we will call home," said McHorney.
The University is seeking to add additional sports for the 2015-2016 season, including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and baseball.
Neufeldt is expected to also compete in basketball when the program starts up.
Neufeldt helped lead the Nighthawks to a 21-15 record and a spot in the state playoffs.
