Thanks to some early scoring, the Ironwood Ridge softball team beat Marana 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Nighthawks scored four runs in the first inning and strong pitching did the rest.

The Nighthawks led 5-0 after two and then the game became a two-way pitchers’ duel until the bottom of the sixth when Ironwood Ridge tacked on two more runs. The host Nighthawks outhit the Tigers 9-3 and also took advantage of four Marana errors.

Emily Robinson earned the win in the circle.

The Nighthawks improve to 21-7 overall and 13-3 in regular season games. They were ranked sixth in the latest ranking release Tuesday morning.

The loss dropped Marana to 21-6 overall and 12-4 in regular season games, but thanks to the high ranking of the Nighthawks, they actually climbed one spot in the rankings to No. 14.

Marana returns to action on Thursday with a home game against Sunnyside, while Ironwood Ridge faces Maricopa that afternoon.
