The Ironwood Ridge boys volleyball team won a five-set thriller over Catalina Foothills on Wednesday night.
It looked like it was going to be an easy night for the Nighthawks as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of 25-21 wins. They had a chance to sweep the match, but the Falcons would not be deterred in the third set and escaped with a 31-29 win to stay alive.
Foothills seemed to steal the momentum tied things up by winning the fourth set 25-18.
The Nighthawks re-gained their mojo and won the fifth set to take the match.
Shane McAdams led the Nighthawks with 12 kills, while Michael Neufeldt had 11 kills and 13 digs. Alexander Krabbendam controlled the net with seven blocks, while setter Matt Solverson dished out 37 of the team’s 41 assists.
For the Falcons, Andrew Adair had 27 kills and 12 digs in a losing effort.
The win boosts Ironwood Ridge to 10-3 on the season and the No. 13 ranking. It is their fifth win in a row.
The loss was a blow for the Falcons who drop to 6-6 and have lost two in a row. They are now ranked No. 24 in the latest rankings. 24 teams make the playoffs, but not necessarily the top-24 ranked teams if a team ranked outside of the top-24 wins their sectional championship.
