The Marana softball team got an important win on Tuesday afternoon, beating Casa Grande 7-4 in the regular season finale. The win snaps a two-game losing streak and could help them solidify their playoff position.
Although the Tigers had lost four of five before the Tuesday win, they were still ranked in the top-16 and likely to host a first round game.
The Tigers were no sharp early, surrendering one in the first, one in the second and trailing 4-0 after five innings.
The Marana bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as they plated six runs that inning, they added an insurance run in the sixth, but by then pitcher Jordan Wengert had found her groove and shut down the Cougars’ bats.
Wengert got the win giving up just six hits, but being plagued by poor defense. The Tigers committed seven errors on the day. Casa Grande was not much better, having five errors themselves.
Casey Cadenhead hit a home run for Marana, one of only eight hits for the Tigers.
The Tigers improved to 22-7 overall and 13-5 in regular season games. They were ranked 14 in the latest poll released Wednesday morning and will now await their playoff fate. The AIA announces the playoff brackets on Thursday afternoon.
