School ended just over a week ago and already high school sports teams are back in action for their summer schedules. The Marana girls basketball participated in Catalina Foothills’ Top of the Hill tournament over the weekend and got to face their district rival, as well as play in a physical contest.
Overall, the Tigers went 3-1 in the event. On the first day they beat Sabino handily, but fell to Tucson High later that day.
Day two saw the Tigers beat rival Mountain View, then beat Sahuaro. The game against the Cougars was a physical one, one that Marana Head Coach Sarah Whaley said got a little tense at times with fans getting a little heated as well.
This weekend the team will be playing at a tournament in Phoenix at Arizona Christian University. That one could be a real endurance test as the team will play all their games on Friday during a seven hour stretch, with only a one hour break during that span. They will play again on Saturday.
“Gut check time,” Whaley said.
This is the last stretch for Whaley as head coach of the Tigers. As previously reported, she resigned last month to become Dean of Students at Marana High School. She will coach through the end of the month.
