High school basketball wrap up: A glimpse of the latest results

Boys Basketball

Canyon Del Oro 

The Canyon Del Oro Dorados (15-6) have been nearly perfect since mid-December, winning 12 of their last 13 games, the most recent coming over Casa Grande (72-56) on Friday. Senior Ty Ochse led the team with 23 points, and junior Jordan Closs-Lopez added 16. The Dorados played Vista Grande yesterday, though results were not available before press time. 

 

Ironwood Ridge

With three regular season games remaining, the Nighthawks hold a .500 record at 12-12 after giving up their last two games to Salpointe Catholic (61-56), and Cholla (50-47). Sophomore Mitch Lightfoot has been one of the team’s stars this year, averaging 13.4 points per game, 11.2 rebounds per game, 2.6 blocks per game, and more than three steals per game. The Nighthawks will look for a win today at Flowing Wells.

 

Pusch Ridge Christian Academy

The Lions improved to 15-7 on the season after collecting a 51-39 win on Saturday against Chandler team Valley Christian. Senior Zachary Alexander led the team with 18 points, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc (2-4) and 55 percent from the field (6-11). Senior Rich McKone added 10 points for the Lions and pulled down six boards. The Lions play Combs High School today at home at 7 p.m.

 

Marana 

The struggling Marana Tigers (0-21) have yet to collect a win this season, with results pending from yesterday’s game against Sahuarita High School. The Tigers fell to 0-21 after losing to Catalina Foothills on Friday evening. The Falcons outscored the Tigers 32-4 in the third quarter, leading to a 66-33 win. Senior Austin Nehls led the Falcons with 19 points. 

 

Mountain View

The Mountain View Mountain Lions gave up their sixth straight loss last Wednesday to Cholla, falling to 5-14 on the season. Despite the loss, junior guard Anthony Marshall continues to be a standout player for Mountain View, averaging nearly 15 points per game. He scored 23 against Cholla, the most he has put up since the team’s season-opening game against Rio Rico, when he scored 34. The Mountain Lions will look to end their losing streak at Tucson High on Friday.

 

Girls Basketball

Canyon Del Oro

Canyon Del Oro holds a 17-6 record with three games unreported. Seniors Sammy Nettling and Madi Hoyer, each averaging 10.7 points per game, have helped propel the Dorados to a state ranking of 36. Hailey Jones is contributing 9.5 points per game. The Dorados faced Vista Grande yesterday. 

 

Ironwood Ridge 

The lady Nighthawks improved to 16-6 on the season after crushing Cholla High School 49-9 on Friday. The 30th-ranked Nighthawks prevented Cholla from scoring in the first and fourth quarters. Senior Casey Wortley and junior Lanea Tuiasosopo combined for 27 points. The Nighthawks play Flowing Wells today at home at 7:30 p.m.

 

Pusch Ridge Christian Academy

The lady Lions (16-5) won four in a row before giving up a game to Valley Christian on Saturday in a 53-42 loss. The Lions currently hold a state rank of 55th under the leadership of Mariah Rotors, who is averaging 14.8 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game. The Nighthawks play Combs High School today at home at 5:30 p.m.

 

Marana 

The Marana Tigers (12-9) picked up their fourth consecutive win on Friday, defeating inner-district rival Mountain View 45-42. Guard Kortnee Day was named player of the game after scoring 22 points and collecting three steals. The Tigers faced Desert View at home yesterday with results pending.

 

Mountain View 

The Mountain Lions (9-14) have struggled as of late, losing four of their last five games, including the most recent to Marana on Friday. With three games remaining in their season, the Mountain Lions will look to improve by collecting wins over Tucson High, Canyon Del Oro, and Salpointe.
