The Marana boys volleyball team gave Salpointe all they could handle, but in the end the Lancers prevailed 3-2.
The loss hurts the Tigers as it snapped a three-game win streak, but it also drops them outside of the top-24, as they were ranked No. 25 on Friday morning. 24 teams make the state playoffs.
The win was huge for the Lancers as they climb to No. 27.
Salpointe came out strong with a convincing 25-15 first set lead. The Tigers answered, winning the second set 25-16.
Things really tightened up in the third and fourth sets, as each team escaped with 25-23 wins. That set up the winner take all fifth set. Both teams battled, but Salpointe escaped with the 15-11 win.
Jake Oldham had 2 kills for Marana and teammate Justin Kilgore had 11.Earnest Jones had four blocks, whole Joshua Kartchner had a team high six digs. Chandler Brown led the Tigers with 42 assists.
The Tigers are in this weekend’s Warrior Classic, but those games do not factor into the postseason rankings. Marana finishes the season next week with Tucson High and Flowing Wells and will need to win both to feel safe about their postseason chances.
