The Ironwood Ridge baseball team used a huge third inning to beat Marana 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Nighhawks broke open a scoreless tie with five runs in the inning and never looked back. Down 6-0, Marana cut the lead in half with a three-run fifth inning, but could get no closer.
Spencer Wilson earned the win, scattering four hits over 4 1/3 innings and striking out four. Evan Molnar finished the game in relief for Ironwood Ridge. Nick Vosburg and Jesus Ramirez each had three hits and Vosburg scored twice.
The loss effectively ends Marana’s already fading playoff chances. The loss is their fifth in a row and dropped them to No. 43 in the rankings. They had been a top-30 team prior to the losing streak. They dropped to 8-8 in the regular season and will return to action on Thursday against Santa Rita.
Ironwood Ridge improved to 7-10 and are just one slot below the Tigers in the rankings at No. 44. The Nighthawks conclude the regular season on Thursday against Maricopa.
