Thanks to seven home runs, No. 3 Canyon Del Oro left little doubt in a 25-3 win over the Catalina Foothills softball team on Tuesday night. The Dorados are the No. 4 team in the state, but are playing like a team that can win state.
The win was their 16th in a row and allowed them to close out the season winning 17 of their final 18 games.
CDO jumped all over the Falcons, scoring four in the first and seven more in the second. The Falcons mustered a single run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 11-1.
The Dorado bats continued to connect as they added five more runs in the third and nine in the fourth. Foothills scored two in the bottom of the fourth to conclude the scoring.
It was a real slugfest for the Dorados as they hit seven home runs and 18 of their 26 hits were for extra bases.
Rebecca Zieglar belted a pair of home runs for the Dorados, while Monique Castillo and Makenzie Sullivan had two doubles and a home run. Samantha Nettling, Shelby Hotchkiss and Ariana Acedo also had home runs. Jordyn Binnion had the game's only triple.
Ilena Santos earned the win for CDO. The Division II state softball tournament brackets will be released on Thursday.
