Ironwood Ridge advanced to the state semi-finals with a 4-2 win over No. 1 Verrado high school. The Nighthawks will now face Cactus on Wednesday with a berth in the state championship game on the line.
With the game tied at two and the bases loaded, Lexi Adelberg singled home two runs in the sixth to put Ironwood Ridge up for good.
Adelberg got the Nighthawks on the scoreboard with a single in the third and they added a second run in the fifth.
Emily Robinson was again strong in the circle, save for a two-run homerun in the fourth.
Cactus used a five-run first inning to beat Marana 5-1 and hand the Tigers their first loss of the postseason. Marana will now face CDO on Tuesday night in an elimination game.
Marana played sloppy in the first inning, committing two of their three errors in the inning and the Cobras took advantage, scoring all of their runs in that inning.
The Tigers struggled with timely hits and could not take advantage of their opportunities, getting a long run in the fourth on a Maya Harper single.
The Tigers and the Dorados will face Tuesday night at Tucson’s Cherry Field. The winner faces the Greenway/Verrado winner, while the loser is eliminated. CDO beat Marana in their lone meeting back on March 27.
