First the fans cheered "We believe that we will win." Then they cheered "This is our house." Finally they just cheered. Ironwood Ridge beat rival Canyon Del Oro 2-1 to claim the Division II state softball championship.

It was the first championship for the Nighthawks and their second straight appearance in the state title game.

Both teams had their opportunities early on, but neither could get the big hit they needed.

The Nighthawks looked like they might have something going in the first but a liner and a quick throw to second got the inning ending double play.

CDO stranded one in the top of the second and Ironwood Ride got on board the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded No. 9 hitter Lu Olson drew a walk that scored Skyler Bracety, who had reached four batters earlier on an error and advanced to third on back to back singles by Robyn Porter and Lexi Orth.

The next inning saw CDO once again put a runner on base, but come away without a run. The Nighthawks again struck in the bottom half of the inning. Reina Bondi singled and two batters late scored on a Porter single.

CDO scored in the top of the fourth. Rebecca Ziegler singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later Monique Castillo hit a single, which was mishandled by the outfielder and allowed Ziegler to score from second.

Both pitchers really settled in from there. Emily Roibinson tossed another gem, while her CDO counterpart Gabrielle Belvins also gave a great effort. Blevins had not been the team's top starter early in the season, but pitched very well in the playoffs and got the nod.

Robinson struggled in the teams playoff opener against Tucson High, but gave up just three runs over the final four games. As good as Robinson was, she gave a lot of credit to her defense.

"I know that my defense is going to get the job done," Robinson said on the Fox Sports Arizona broadcast. "All I have to do is get the ball down on the ground for them."
