Three area athletes won state tennis championships and several others advanced to the state semi-finals.

Catalina Foothills’ Kirtana Bhat won the Division II girls single title, beating Sabrina Barkdull of Arcadia. Bhat actually dropped the first set 7-6, but then rallied to win the final two sets 6-4 and 6-0.

It is Bhat’s third state title, she previously won a pair of doubles titles with her sister Rashana.

Pusch Ridge’s Jarod Bristol advanced to the Division III boys semi-finals but fell to eventual state champion Max Schell of Estrella Foothills. Bristol takes third in state due to his opponent in the consolation final pulling out.

Ironwood Ridge won the Division II girls doubles championship. The Nighthawks’ Kelsey Brown and Allison Knox defeated Notre Dame’s Caitlin Railson and Sarah Eversman 6-3, 6-2. It was a bit of an upset as Railson and Eversman were the top seeded team in the tournament, while Brown and Knox were No. 3.

Brown and Knox had to pull another upset in the semi-finals, beating No. 2 Noelle Karp and Katie Watson of Catalina Foothills 6-2, 6-1.

Karp and Watson took third place, winning the consolation finals 6-1, 6-0.

The Falcons took home the boys doubles championship as No. 1 seeded Nate Rasmussen and Quinn Gardner beat Notre Dames’ Adrian Cordova and Nick Silvestri 4-6, 6-0, 7-6.

Their fellow Foothills teammates Bogdan Racolta and John Miller lost in the semi-finals, but took the third place title match by default. Push Ridge’s Davis Towne-Camron Vick fell in the Division III doubles championship 6-2, 6-3 to Thatcher’s Nathan McMaster and Reed Goodman.

Catalina Foothills

The Falcon baseball team survived a five-run second inning and beat Cienega 7-5 in the first round of the Division II baseball playoffs. The Falcons took advantage of five Bobcat errors and scored seven runs over the final three innings to earn the win.

The Falcons softball team struggled this season and concluded the regular season on a lengthy losing streak. Their playoff hopes were realistically dashed early on but they kept fighting, playing some tight games with Mountain View and Casa Grande. They finished the regular season at 1-17 and 5-22 overall.

Canyon Del Oro

The Canyon Del Oro baseball team limited Tucson High to four hits and and used a pair of Erick Migueles home runs to beat the Badgers 7-4 in the first round of the Division II state baseball playoffs.

The Dorados softball team earned the No. 4 seed and a bye in the state playoffs and were set to host No. 13 Sunnyside on Tuesday after the Blue Devils beat Vista Grande 7-3 in the opening round

Ironwood Ridge

The Ironwood Ridge softball team is the No. 5 seed in the Division II state playoffs and were set to meet No. 12 Tucson High on Tuesday after receiving a bye in the first round.

The Nighthawks baseball team won three of their last four games, but did not qualify for the postseason. They finished 8-10 on the regulars season and were ranked No. 41 in the final poll.

Marana

Casey Cadenhead tossed a five-hit complete game shutout and Marana beat Desert Edge 3-0 in the first round of the Division II state softball playoffs. The Tigers took advantage of an error in the fifth that allowed two runs to score after back-to-back base hits.

A tough finish to the season saw the Tiger baseball team fail to make the playoffs. Although they won their final two games of the season, that snapped a five-game losing streak. The Tigers finished at 10-8 and No. 40 in the final poll.

Mountain View

Both the Mountain View softball and baseball teams failed to qualify for the postseason. The Mountain Lions softball team made a run at it in the end, climbing nine spots in the ranking over the final week of the season. They climbed up to No. 27 in the rankings winning five of their last six games.

The baseball team finished 9-9, appearing at No. 42 in the final Division II poll.

Pusch Ridge

The Pusch Ridge baseball team fell behind 8-1, but rallied to beat St. John’s 10-9 to advance to the second round of the Division IV state playoffs. The Lions scored a walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth to earn the extra innings win.

The girls tennis team lost in the opening round of the Division III state playoffs 5-0 to No. 3 Buckeye Union.
