Even with two of their best players no longer with the team, the Catalina Foothills boys tennis team rolled in the first round. The undefeated and top-seeded Falcons beat Goodyear Desert Edge 5-0 in the first round of the Division II Boys Team Tennis Playoffs.
The Falcons took care of business during the singles portion of the match and never needed to go to doubles. In fact, they dropped just two total games over the five matches.
With brothers Mike and Jackson Lee no longer on the team, Bogdan Racolta assumed the No. 1 spot and dispatched Bryant Perez 6-0, 6-1. Josh Mantell was the only other Falcon do drop a game, also winning his match 6-0, 6-1.
Nate Rasmussen, Quinn Gardner and Dalton Resig won their matches 6-0, 6-0.
Mike Lee, the defending state singles champion, left the team prior to the state singles championships, and had to forfeit his first round match in that event. Older brother Jackson, a favorite to make a deep run as well, left the team a few weeks prior. Reasons for their leaving have not been made public.
The team’s depth has been a key as they are 15-0 this season. They will return to action next Tuesday as they host No. 8 Notre Dame Prep, a team that finished the year winning 9 or their last 10 regular season matches and won eight straight matches before a April 16 loss to Salpointe.
