The Marana boys baseball team suffered a big defeat in their quest to make the Division II state playoffs. They fell 8-1 to Palo Verde on Monday and now their playoff hopes are in real jeopardy.
The Tigers fell to 36th in the latest rankings and that did not take into account the loss to the Titans. Even if the 8-7 Tigers win out, their strength of schedule the rest of the way does not look like it would elevate them into the top-24 needed to be in the mix for a spot. Although currently fourth in their section, the Tigers could mathematically tie for the section championship, but would not get the tiebreaker to earn the automatic bid.
The game was tied 1-1 when the Titans took over, scoring twice in the third and then adding three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Both teams hit the ball well, Palo Verde with nine and Marana with eight, but the Titans had more timely hitting.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday with a road game at Ironwood Ridge.
