Even when things looked grim, the Mountain View wrestling team never gave up en route to a runner-up finish in the D-II state tournament.
The Mountain Lions, who finished the season with a 26-2 dual meet record, trailed by 25 points heading into the final two rounds of the D-II Section II tournament before winning a critical match over Cienega High School, and ultimately winning the sectional tournament by 43 points.
Leading the way were Ryan Henkel (113 pounds), Trey Waltz (126 pounds), and Adrian Torres (152 pounds), who each won section titles at their respective weights.
With the win, the resilient Mountain Lions qualified 12 out of 14 wrestlers for the state tournament, which took place a week later at Tim’s Toyota Arena in Prescott Valley.
The Mountain Lions split the runner-up honor after tying Cienega at 100.5 points each. Yuma Cibola won the title with 169 points. Mountain View had six wrestlers win all-state honors, to include: Camden Garcia – fifth place at 120 lbs., Trey Waltz – second Place at 126 pounds, Tyler Werch at 138 pounds, Adrian Torres – fourth at 152 pounds, Jake Wareham – fifth at 160 pounds, and John Reynolds – fourth at 220 pounds.
The Mountain Lions’ coaching staff credits the team’s success to the dedication, discipline, and team unity that the team possessed during the off-season and regular season.
“They just never gave up,” said head coach Paul Ponce. “When things looked tough for them, they just kept on going. I’m really proud of our guys this year.”
