The 2012 soccer season is under way, and the Canyon Del Oro girls’ team took on inner-district rival Ironwood Ridge on Nov. 24 in the quarterfinals of the Brandon-Bean Invitational.
Ironwood Ridge came out strong in the first half, with a superior offense. CDO would never have a chance at shooting in the first half due to a dominate Ironwood Ridge offense. Ironwood Ridge would have a total of 13 shots, six of which were on goal. A withered CDO defense continued to struggled, drawing an illegal tackle penalty, which gave Ironwood Ridge a penalty kick late in the first half, which was successful, giving the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead.
CDO would have four saves after the first half, but it wasn’t enough to keep the score tied.
In the second half, Ironwood Ridge continued to show off their offensive capabilities. They would constantly shoot the ball again, putting pressure on CDO early in the half. Ironwood Ridge had 14 shots on goal in the second, with better accuracy making it 12 shots on goal.
CDO’s defense stepped up in the second half, showing more blocked goals and the goalie having 7 saves.
But the very energetic Ironwood team would score a goal off an Ironwood Ridge throw in, making the score 2-0.
The CDO girls’ team did showed signs of fatigue after the second goal. Two players had to be escorted away with signs of heat exhaustion.
As the final whistle sounded, Ironwood Ridge had eliminated CDO, winning 2-0.
Ironwood Ridge would lose to Catalina Foothills in the semifinals.
