Oro Valley resident Abe Grijalva was named the new softball coach at Flowing Wells last week. Grijalva, the longtime softball coach for Douglas High School, semi-retired to Oro Valley after 30 years at Douglas, 17 coaching softball.

Last year he helped coach freshman football, basketball and baseball at Flowing Wells and will continue to be a substitute teacher, afetr a lengthy career teaching Spanish and physical education.

Grijalva won 310 games at Douglas and had two top-five finishes in the past six years, thanks in part to current Arizona Wildcat softball player Erika Tapia, who was a standout for the Bulldogs.

Grijalva replaces Terri Swaney who failed to lead the Lady Cabs to the playoffs in three seasons, but did guide them to a 14-13 record last season.

He is a Douglas High School and Northern Arizona University graduate. He is expected to continue to coach freshman football at Flowing Wells.
