Contributed photo, Gordon A. Ewy, MD, director of University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center, demonstrates the three steps of chest compression-only CPR. After determining that the person is not responsive (shake and shout, rub chest bone with knuckles), step 1 is to call 911. Step 2 is to lock elbows and compress the chest about two inches. Step 3 is to lift up about two inches, allowing the chest to fully recoil.
