Southern Arizona Celiac Support has received the largest grant of its type in Arizona from Prometheus Laboratories of San Diego, which means the group can now administer the most comprehensive, free community-based screening in the country.

SACS will administer these tests free of charge on one day only, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Resort, 4550 S. Palo Verde Road. Pre-registration is required using the form at www.southernarizonaceliacsupport.org.

Studies completed in 2009 show that together, the two blood tests screen people more effectively than either test can alone. They are the TTG (tissue transglutaminase test for gut damage) and the newer DGP (deaminated gliadin peptide test for reactivity to gluten).

Recipients must presently be eating gluten and will be assigned based on medical history, not on ability to pay. Test results are an indication, not a diagnosis.

The grant was received in time for the screenings to be given at the support group’s largest annual event, the Gluten Free Food Faire. It is designed to educate the public about gluten-free food. Local high-end and casual eateries comprise the first-ever GF Restaurant Row. There will be many free GF food samples and products for sale.

The group’s Medical Advisory Board panel of medical professionals will answer health questions, as will noted author/Celiac Disease mentor Melissa Diane Smith.  She will donate all proceeds from her books, including her newest release, Gluten Free Throughout the Year, to SACS’s continuing educational programs.

This year, the fair moves to larger quarters due to the ever-increasing number of attendees.

For more information about the fair, Celiac Disease and non-CD gluten intolerance, visit www.southernarizonaceliacsupport.org or call 971-9595.
