Recently, Beth Ernst, Splendido’s Life Enrichment Manager and Program Coordinator Hollis Egan, stepped out from a pool party with the residents of Splendido, to talk about the rich assortment of programs available to those who live there. Splendido is an industry leading Continuing Care Retirement Community in Tucson, home to about 300 residents. It is part of The Plaza Companies, an award-winning Arizona developer and Mather LifeWays, an Illinois not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults by providing senior living residences, and by researching and implementing Ways to Age Well.

Not surprisingly then, programs at Splendido are all about living well in every dimension. According to Ernst and Hollis, programs at Splendido are organized around six components of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, vocational and social. They say a successful activity is educational, meaningful and beneficial for participants. Sometimes it’s the staff that initiates an idea, other times it’s a resident. Either way, those who live here have the support and resources they need to explore their interests.

Here’s a look at a few of the current offerings at Splendido:

Splendido’s Intellectual Pursuits Program offers a variety of classes taught by residents including Spanish, Psychology, Bridge, CPR, and Solving World Problems. Attendance is often more than 100 people.

Vespers is a non-denominational service held each Thursday, organized by residents. A different religious teacher is featured each week across a spectrum of world religions.

Outreach Committee plans fund-raising and other charitable activities. Each Mother’s Day, they organize jewelry-making and/or a jewelry donation for young, disadvantaged school children so they can pick and choose a gift of jewelry for their mothers.

Writer’s Workshop is a year-long program for residents to practice and share their writing. The class is taught by resident and published author Pat Linder.

First Friday is a monthly social event in the Granada Lounge with live piano music and beverages, for mingling and welcoming new residents to the community.

Singles Night Out and Couples Night Out are monthly events to check out and enjoy local restaurants.

Loop d’ Loop is a crafting group where women work on projects together. A few times a year, the group creates crafts for charity. For example, they have made dresses for young girls in Africa.

Gestures of Joy shares the magic of song through an original combination of music, sign language, and movement, as the group performs for audiences around Tucson.

Splendido’s resort-style living offers five dining venues, a 10,000-square-foot fitness center and spa with two saline swimming pools, a movie theater, an arts studio, and an 18-hole putting course.
