Images that captured moments in time and timeless moments — like Tiger Woods awaiting a golf ball landing mid-swing and buildings abandoned and forgotten — have drawn artists and visitors to the Ventana Gallery halls for the 2010 Photography and Digital Arts Visual Arts Exhibition and Competition.

Winners of the juried competition, themed "People and Places," were announced Oct. 7 by the show's sponsors, Ventana Medical Systems and the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance.

Marco Pannacchini captured first place with "Ballet Folklorico."

"The joy and enthusiasm of these young dancers show the pride of Mexican culture at the annual Fiesta de Guadalupe at DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun," Pennacchini wrote.

Edlynne Sillman won second with "Chess Master."

"Capturing the intriguing mysteries of people's inner souls through candid portraiture piques my curiosity," Sillman wrote. "A man of many tales, relaxing in a new country, playing chess."

Ellen Fountain took third place with "Three Flights Down."

"I took this image from the third floor deck of our townhouse on a sunny, Sunday afternoon," Fountain wrote. "I used both Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter to alter the photo in a 'painterly' way."

Honorable mention went to Anupama Condon's "Jacob's Ladder," George Miraben's "Opening Day," Ellen Fountain's "Nightlife IV" and an untitled work by Chrystal McConnell.

The artwork is on sale and display at Ventana through Jan. 3. People may visit the gallery and vote on their favorite piece for the People's Choice Award, or purchase artworks from the exhibit Wednesdays 9 a.m. to noon and Fridays 1 to 4 p.m.
