An indoor, monthly art bazaar debuts in midtown Tucson this Saturday, June 19.

The first of monthly Saturday Art Bazaars at Historic Broadway Village runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring dozens of artists working in a variety of media, from sculpture and pottery to jewelry and visual art.

Shows take place in the same location as the Friday farmers market, an indoor space on the southwest corner of Eastbourne Avenue and Broadway Boulevard.

"It's an excellent central location for artists to display and sell their works," said Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance executive director Kate Marquez. "More importantly, it's an easy-to-access, comfortable, air-conditioned space for artists and customers alike."

Typically, Tucson's hot summer months have meant fewer opportunities for local and regional artists to present their works at festivals and other venues. The SAACA-Broadway Village partnership provides artists with four opportunities to market their work in what otherwise might be a slow time of year.

The Joesler/Murphey-designed Broadway Village opened in 1939, and was Tucson's first suburban shopping center. With its prime location, the center quickly became a popular gathering place for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods.

"Given the widespread interest people have in the Friday farmers markets, we think that the Saturday art bazaars will offer yet another compelling reason to visit this historic strip," Marquez said.
