Do you have a favorite firefighter at Golder Ranch Fire District?
Now is your chance to let the world know.
The men of Golder Ranch recently set aside their bulky yellow suits to model for a 2009 pin-up calendar, which they will sell on Valentine’s Day in front of several Northwest grocery stores.
Each month features a different guy posing shirtless in a personalized setting. One shot includes horses. Many include antique fire trucks.
“The fire service really is about tradition,” said Matt Peru, who helped to put the calendar together. “The calendar’s set in duotone to give it an older type of classy look.”
The firefighters’ decision to create the muscle-heavy calendar was a response to demand, Peru said.
“We had a lot of people always asking us if we had a firefighter calendar, because Tucson used to do one,” he said.
But it also gave the department a way to raise money for charities it supports, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association and a Christmas adopt-a-family program.
“During Christmas, we usually find three needy families and help out with food, give them a tree and give them gift cards,” Peru said. “We do the gift cards so parents can pick out what their kids need. It helps them share the picking rather than us just giving things.”
The firefighters completed their photo shoots in August and started selling the calendars in November. So far, they have sold about 1,200.
Proceeds so far have benefited Project Amor, a Tucson-based nonprofit that provides early intervention services to families with infants, toddlers and older children with developmental delays. They also have covered the district’s expenses for entry in the Tucson Firefighters Chili Cook-off in November, which benefited the firefighters’ adopt-a-family program.
