Tucson Dance Academy presents the Tucson premiere of a long-running Christmas show, Spirit of Christmas, this Saturday, Dec. 12, in two shows at Ironwood Ridge High School.

For more than 20 years, the Christian Dance Company of Tempe Dance Academy has entertained the Phoenix area with "a perennial favorite holiday show that is part Broadway spectacular, part Christmas pageant, and 100 percent family entertainment," a release said.

The Tempe academy is now coming to Tucson, joining with Tucson Dance Academy to form a cast of more than 100 dancers.

"Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" is described as the Rockettes' "choreographic masterpiece," running perennially since 1933 along with "The Living Nativity" in New York City's Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Tucson Dance Academy is under the artistic direction of Tammy Booth, a former Olympic gymnast and Rockette dancer, and her husband Tom Booth, a musician / composer / producer.

Tammy Booth trains her dancers "to authentically reproduce the rigid dance steps that have you believing that a stage full of dancers are overgrown, animated wooden toys," the release said.

"With stiff-legged military precision, dancers maintain perfectly straight lines while moving in unison through ever-shifting configurations that culminate with an awe-inspiring ending where a long line of dancers topple into each other like a row of human dominoes," it continued.

Proceeds from the show benefit the Gospel Rescue Mission, a faith based, non-denominational organization that "strives to abolish homelessness, addiction and spiritual hopelessness," the release said.
