Single tickets are now available for a MasterWorks season exploring hundreds of years of masterful pieces of music, presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance.
The 2011-2012 concert series will feature the Tucson Symphony Orchestra recreating music composed from the 17th through 21st centuries, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7575 N. Paseo del Norte.
The musical forms introduced by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and generally referred to as “Classical,” will be performed. More varied than a festival of jazz, blues and rock, this series features five centuries of great music, from the opening concert “Outside the Bachs” on Nov. 4 to the closing concert, “Mozart and Beethoven,” on March 2.
“Mozart and Beethoven” will open with the exciting 21st century composer Michael Torke’s “Ash.” This title follows Torke’s propensity for colors in naming his works.
“Variations on Tchaikovsky” is Musical Director George Hanson’s pragmatic appropriation of a wide range of Tchaikovsky’s music. The ballet “Sleeping Beauty” gave the composer an opportunity to provide a melodious pas de deux, later arranged by Stravinsky. Tchaikovsky’s reverence for Mozart will be noted in his “Variations on a Rococo Theme,” while his “Serenade in C minor” sings the beauty and extreme emotion that admittedly he noted, “I wrote from an inward impulse.” This Tchaikovsky program is filled with variations.
For the month commemorating Arizona’s statehood, the Feb. 3 MasterWorks concert, “American Portraits.” Copland’s “Three Latin-American Sketches” could cause a re-titling of the evening’s program to “The Americas’ Portraits.” The balance of the program is made more folk-like with the concerto for Stephen Seifert’s mountain dulcimer. A newly commissioned work by Connie Ellisor will be played by Seifert. The previously heard “Blackberry Winter,” also composed by Ellisor, provides great anticipation for this new marriage of the dulcimer and the orchestra.
