Music director and conductor George Hanson will conduct the Tucson Symphony MasterWorks Chamber Orchestra in Virtuoso Violin and Haydn on Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. The program will feature TSO Concertmaster Aaron Boyd performing Henri Vieuxtemps’ Concerto No. 5 for Violin and conclude with Franz Joseph Haydn’s popular Symphony No. 92, “Oxford.” Beethoven’s Overture to Coriolan will open the program. An additional performance of Virtuoso Violin and Haydn will be presented Friday, March 4 at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7650 N. Paseo Del Norte, in Oro Valley by the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance.

“The Vieuxtemps Concerto is a virtuoso showcase for violin and was Aaron Boyd’s first choice,” commented Hanson. “These are three of the most popular classical works ever.”

At a time when most violinists played only their own music in public, Henri Vieuxtemps was the first of a modern breed; he was equally famed as composer, virtuoso and interpreter. His compositions were significant enough to cause Berlioz to state that

“Vieuxtemps is as remarkable a composer as he is an incomparable virtuoso!”

Known as the “father of the symphony,” Haydn had the unique opportunity to hone his craft under the generous, yet initially controlling patronage of the wealthy Esterházy family in Hungary. Though he worked in relative isolation at the Esterházy residence, once his fame grew, Haydn was allowed to accept commissions from all over Europe. Composed in Paris, Symphony No. 92 “Oxford” acquired its nickname after it was performed at Oxford when Haydn was awarded an honorary doctorate from the university. The TSO has not performed Haydn’s “Oxford” Symphony since November 1965.
