Playwright and filmmaker Neil Labute is known for creating stories that can be difficult to watch, but equally difficult to ignore, such as "In the Company of Men" and "The Shape of Things."

Now his play "Fat Pig" brings Labute's brutally honest commentary on our cultural obsession with physical appearance and self-image to Tucson this weekend, thanks to the daVinci Players of Studio Connections. The play is being performed Nov. 11-27 at St. Francis in the Foothills, 4625 E. River Road in Tucson.

When Tom falls for plus-sized Helen, he confronts the reality of a taunting circle of influence and must decide how far he must go to defend his only meaningful relationship.

In an interview broadcast Jan. 19, 2006 on National Public Radio, Labute told listeners that audiences "recognize the behavior" exhibited by the play's lead character.

"He has a private life and a public life, and he can't marry them in the end, and, and so that's what was fascinating in that play," Labute told host Neal Conan. "As I wrote it, I had to shift from it being about one thing into seeing that it really was about how, how weak someone can be in the face of, you know, it's easy to say we would do this or do that, or be strong or save someone, and in the end when you have to actually do it, it's a much trickier bargain."

The provocative comedy contains adult content and language. It features Jacinda Swinehart-Johnson as Helen, Alex Samaniego as Tom, Jonathan Northover as Carter and Shanna Brock as Jeannie, and is directed by Robert Encila.

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11-12, Nov. 18-19 and Nov. 25-26, and 2 p.m. Nov. 13, 20 and 27.

General admission is $20; student, senior citizen and military admissions are $18.
