Special to The Explorer

A second tour of Oro Valley's public art is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19.

The bus tour, originating at Oro Valley Marketplace, begins at 9 a.m.

This year's first public art tour was a sell-out, so the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance now plans such cruises through the year. A third tour is set for Jan. 23.

Tours last approximately three hours, and include complimentary water and a keepsake Oro Valley public art brochure. Price is $25 per person on an air-conditioned coach that can seat up to 55 people. For more information or to book the public art tour, call 797-3959. Space is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended.

The Town of Oro Valley began commissioning works of art in 1997 with the passage of a 1 percent for public art ordinance. The code mandates that 1 percent of the construction budget of all commercial developments and public works projects be used to develop public art. Today, the community's public art collection includes more than 40 projects in photography, sculptures, paintings, textiles, stained glass, murals, steel, iron and ceramics.

Gail Munden, local artist and designer of the first Oro Valley Public Art Book, leads groups of up to 55 on customized tours through Oro Valley neighborhoods, streets and commercial developments where public art has been installed. Tour participants can learn about the artists, their creative process and a history of the Oro Valley's public art.
