George Strait tribute show coming to Foothills Mall Strait Country

The critically acclaimed George Strait tribute show that has been selling out concert venues throughout Southern Arizona for the past year, will be performed free this Saturday starting at 8 p.m. at My Big Fat Greek Restaurant, 7265 N. La Cholla, in the Foothills Mall.

The Tucson-based group features pedal steel guitar and fiddle. These two instruments are key to the signature sound that has been Strait’s trademark throughout his unparalleled 30-year career.

The band features professional musicians playing on bass, drums and keyboards, and contributing three-part backing vocals. The concert showcases Strait’s hits, selected from an amazing 57 Number One songs and 83 Top Tens.

It also includes some of his lesser known gems.

Spots open for WNPA basket-making class Sept. 9

Reservations are still being accepted for a new basket-making workshop that was added at the WNPA National Parks Store, 12880 N. Vistoso Village Drive in Oro Valley.

The class will be conducted by Tohono O’odham artist Della Cruz. It will take place Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class is limited to 15 students, who will learn about the plants, materials, tools, designs, techniques and traditions of the unique basket art form.

The cost is $75 for WNPA members and $85 for non-members. The fee includes all instruction, materials, supplies and lunch. This workshop involves working with sharp implements and will require a signed liability waiver. Registration must be prepaid and is non-refundable. Register by phone or in person call 622-6014.

Matinee added For ‘Comedy Genius of O. Henry’  

The Comedy Playhouse has added a matinee performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday for “The Comedy Genius of O. Henry.” Admission is $12 with discounts available for seniors and students. 

The production is appropriate for ages 8 and older. The cast includes Nell Summers, Drew Kallen, Tony Eckstat, Alan Gordon and Bruce Bieszki.

The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. First Ave., at the northeast corner of First Avenue and Prince Road.

SB to hold free bluegrass fest this Sunday

The MountainView Country Club in SaddleBrooke will be the site of two hours of bluegrass music by some of Tucson’s best pickers this Sunday. The free bluegrass jam is open to the public.

Music lovers can come and listen; they even can bring an instrument and join in.

The music will be played from 4 to 6 p.m. in the country club’s Palo Verde room, which can hold about 200 people.

Now in it second year, the jam takes place every second Sunday at the country club, 38759 S. Moun-tainView Blvd.
