Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary doles out large amounts of compassion and asks for little in return. At the receiving end of the attention are horses, many rescued from abuse or the likelihood of slaughter.

The public's place in this process is to have fun at one of the organization's fundraisers, the proceeds of which support the sanctuary's four-legged friends.

The upcoming third annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction Gala will be held at Hacienda del Sol Resort on Sunday, Nov. 1, to include southern Arizona wines from Kief-Joshua Vineyards (Elgin), Lightning Ridge Cellars (Elgin) and a new release from Colibri Vineyard (Portal). The Colibri Syrah bottle features a Dikki Van Helsland batik of Maya, a mare rescued from Canada.

In addition, plenty of hors d'oeuvres, live music by Becky Reyes, door and raffle prizes and auctions will be awaiting attendees Sunday afternoon.

Karen Pomroy, owner of Jumpin' Jack Ranch in Green Valley, founded Equine Voices with the goal of rescuing horses from Canada, transporting them to Arizona and caring for them until they can be adopted.

Why do horses need rescuing?

Many of the horses brought here by Pomroy are Premarin mares and their foals. Premarin is an artificial estrogen used for treating symptoms of menopause. The drug, also called PMU, is produced from pregnant mares' urine. Mares are kept constantly pregnant in extreme conditions, and their babies are often sent to the slaughterhouse.

In 2002, medical research studies concluded that hormone replacement drugs such as Premarin could lead to cancer and stroke. Demand for the drugs decreased as many women discontinued their use. As a result, Premarin farms, mostly in Canada, began shutting down.

That's good news for the horses, of course. But as long as the drug is still on the market, which it is, and women continue taking it, pharmaceutical companies will keep farms open and Equine Voices will maintain its rescue and adoption programs.

Pomroy and her volunteers have saved more than 200 mares and foals since 2002 and are always looking for candidates to adopt a horse. Folks who are interested in helping financially but are unable to adopt can sponsor a horse with a monthly tax-deductible contribution. More information is available on the website or through volunteers during the gala.
