A ninth year of free Northwest programming begins in August through Temple Emanu-El.

For eight years, the temple has provided Jewish classes, Shabbat, holidays, and family events in Northwest Tucson. Its motto is "If you're in the Northwest, we're bringing Judaism to you."

Free Taste of Judaism classes are planned at Nanini Library, 7300 N. Shannon, on three Mondays, Aug. 17, 24 and 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. A monthly Shabbat dinner and service is held at the Westward Look Resort, 245 E. Ina, this Friday, Aug. 14 at 6 p.m.

"Taste of Judaism" is a free introductory class that offers samplings of Jewish spirituality, values and community in three two-hour sessions. Rabbi Benjamin Sharff presents "a deeper understanding of Jewish history, practice, rituals and culture, and answers questions about Judaism," a release said. "This fun, interactive course includes homemade 'tastes' of traditional Jewish foods."

It is open to all, Jews and non-Jews. There are no fees but pre-registration is required because space is limited. Call Mila at 327-4501, extension 27.

Because there is no regular synagogue in the Northwest, a monthly Shabbat dinner and service are held at the Westward Look Resort. After a kosher Shabbat dinner, Rabbi Benjamin Sharff and Northwest Cantorial soloist Lori Sumberg lead a Sabbath evening service, followed by dessert and more conversation.

In September, a pre-Rosh Hashanah Shabbat with honey cake for a sweet new year is planned.

Shabbat dinner is $11 for Temple members, $13 for non-members, kids under 13 free; Elle Restaurant provides a side dish (vegetarian option available).

For the annual schedule of Northwest Shabbats and to RSVP for Aug. 14, call Mila at 327-4501.
