Interfaith Community Services is launching a campaign to build a 2,700-square-foot food bank building.

A private foundation has committed $150,000 to the building – estimated to cost $350,000 – if ICS raises the remaining $200,000 by Aug. 31, 2011. ICS has already received a $35,000 Community Development Block Grant through Pima County for design work.

"Our food bank has experienced explosive growth," said ICS Executive Director Bonnie Kampa. "We are gridlocked in our 400-square-foot space as we serve as many as 90 families per day.

"We know our client base will continue to expand, and we have the capability to acquire more food," Kampa said. "However, without additional space we simply cannot adequately respond to the growing issue of hunger in our community."

The ICS Food Bank supplied $650,000 in food assistance to nearly 11,500 people last year. It is the only food bank or pantry in Pima County that is open six days a week and one of only seven open on Saturdays.

The new building will include a walk-in refrigerator and freezer for distribution of fresh and frozen food and will also have space for nutrition education services.
