Horse rescue to benefit by Saturday event

An evening of fine art and music this Saturday, Aug. 21, is raising funds for a horse rescue organization.

"H.O.T. August Nights," playing on the initials for the non-profit rescue organization HEART of Tucson, is set from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Steinway Piano Gallery Tucson, the northeast corner of Skyline and Campbell.

During the evening, guests can participate in a silent auction, enjoy a piano quartet in concert, and sample wine, gourmet cheeses and desserts.

Advance tickets are required at $75 per person. They must be purchased by Wednesday, Aug. 18, through Steinway Piano Gallery, or by calling 888-325-9797.

HEART of Tucson stands for Happy Equine Acres Rescue and Therapy.

Aug. 28 event aids family of slain man

An event to help the family of slain Tucson businessman Tom Piazza is being held Saturday, Aug. 28, at Loews Ventana Canyon.

A silent auction, cash bar cocktail hour, dinner, live auction and dancing form the evening. There are three live bands. The Tucson Jazz Trio plays during the cocktail idol. Crystal Stark of American Idol fame performs during dinner. The band Still Cruisin' offers dance music. Dana Cooper and Chris Dunn do the hosting.

"This is going to be an amazing event," said Chris Griebel, who leads a comfort and loss ministry at Northwest Bible Church. "People have stepped up" to help.

Beth Piazza and the couple's four children under the age of 10 live in the Northwest. Tom Piazza was slain by a gunman at an Oracle Road restaurant in June. He was "well known in the community," Griebel said.

Beth is now "a single mom who has four children to raise on her own," Griebel said. "This is long-term."

Organizers and donors are making "a heartfelt response," she continued. "They didn't know Beth. They felt they wanted to help her. The group has been phenomenal."

Among the silent and live auction items are a new golf cart, tickets to see the Arizona Diamondbacks, an autographed guitar from Christian musician Steven Curtis Chapman, and musical items from other stars.

The event runs from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Catalina Foothills resort.

Tickets are $65 before Monday, Aug. 23, and $75 at the door. They may be purchased at www.FaithInActionAZ.com, or by calling 440-4305.

People who cannot attend, but would like to give, may donate through the web site.

OV starts series with conversation about storm water

A conversation about storm water launches "Peek Behind the Curtain," a new series planned by the Town of Oro Valley that'll help people "learn about the many award-winning programs and services offered by the town," a release said.

Dave Parker, the town's stormwater utility manager, speaks this Thursday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Casas Church, 10801 N. La Cholla Blvd.

Parker is showcasing "the many ways that the town preserves and protects the community's natural and built environments in the wake of heavy rains, flooding and other water catastrophes," the release said. "The interactive presentation will offer ways residents can learn to protect their property from long-term damage."

The program is free and open to the public.

"This is the season we welcome our monsoons," Parker said. "It's important to be aware of the inherent issues associated with the damage that can come from our summer storms."
